Werner Graeff (1901-1978)

Werner Graeff, born in Sonnborn Germany, was a sculptor, painter, graphic artist, photographer and inventor. He was a key figure in the Bauhaus and the Constructivism movements.

Around 1920 he created cubist simplified landscape paintings, wooden sculptures, first abstract paintings and reliefs. 1921/22 he was a student at the Bauhaus in Weimar and studied with Oskar Schlemmer and Theo Van Doesburg. He became a member of the group "De Stijl" and contributed to "G" Journal. He was frequently invited to lecture in the USA and died while on a lecture tour in 1978 in Virginia.

The estate of the artist, managed by his second wife Ursula Graeff-Hirsch, was bequeathed in 2009 to the Museum Wiesbaden. Very few works are found for sale on the market so Circa Modern is honored to exhibit the Graeff family's collection from the estate of Roberto Graeff for the first time.

Additionally Circa is proud to present early works by geometric painter Ursula Graeff-Hirsch whose career spans over sixty years.

In 1947 she began an art education in Munich and Essen and then trained under a master glass painter at anapprenticeship in Bonn. Countless works can be admired in the Ruhr area, but also in the south of France. There, in a small chapel in the wilderness of the Cévennes, windows were created for which she was awarded a medal of the Republic of France. Ursula Hirsch is a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. She also designed the Stations of the Cross in the Cistercian Monastery Mülheim-Saarn. Since 1955 she has worked equally as a freelance glass painter and painter. Her artistic focus is on abstract painting, reliefs in stainless steel, etchings and sculptures. Solo exhibitions of her works took place in Germany, France and Italy.

Under the title Hurdles through the 20th Century, Graeff-Hirsch published her husband's memories of the Bauhaus era in 2010. Ursula has lived and worked in Mülheim an der Ruhr since 1970.
